Private Label Body Wash Manufacturing: A Buyer's Guide

Body wash looks simpler than skincare and is not. Surfactant choice, viscosity and packaging compatibility decide whether your first run ships on time.

Private Label Body Wash Manufacturing: A Buyer's Guide

Body wash is usually the second or third product a new personal care brand adds, after the hero skincare item. It looks like the easy one — it is mostly water and surfactant, it does not need the same stability work as a serum. In practice it is where a lot of first orders go sideways, because the variables that matter are not the ones brands ask about.

Start With the Surfactant System

This single decision drives cost, feel and your claim set. The main families you will be offered:

  • SLS / SLES based — the traditional workhorse. Cheap, excellent foam, and increasingly out of favour with consumers who read ingredient lists. Still the correct choice for a value-positioned line.
  • Sulfate-free (isethionates, sulfosuccinates) — milder, creamier lather, noticeably more expensive per kilo. This is what most indie brands ask for by default now.
  • Amino acid based — the premium tier. Closest to skin pH, luxurious feel, and the highest raw material cost of the three.
  • Blends — most commercial formulas use two or three surfactants together to get foam, mildness and cost where they want them.

Ask your manufacturer to send samples of the same fragrance across two surfactant systems. The difference in lather is immediate and it makes the pricing conversation much easier.

Viscosity Is a Specification, Not a Guess

Body wash needs to sit on a loofah without running off, and to pump cleanly from a bottle. That means a target viscosity, usually somewhere between 3,000 and 8,000 centipoise depending on the pack. Viscosity is controlled with salt, thickeners or both, and it moves when you change fragrance, active load or even the water quality at the plant.

Specify a range, not a number, and specify how it will be measured. A formula that reads 5,000 cP on one viscometer can read 4,200 on another. If you are not testing it yourself, ask for the batch record value.

Fragrance Load and What It Does to Your Formula

Fragrance is where body wash brands differentiate, and also where formulas break. A 1.5 per cent load behaves very differently from a 0.3 per cent load — it can cloud a clear gel, shift viscosity, and in some cases destabilise the emulsion if you are making a cream body wash. Fragrances also carry their own allergen labelling requirements in the EU.

If you have a fragrance you want to use, send it to the factory for a compatibility test rather than assuming it will drop in. That test costs almost nothing and prevents a very expensive failure.

Packaging Decides Your Fill Line

Pumps, discs, flip-tops and tubes all have different minimum fill volumes and different headspace requirements. A 250 ml pump bottle usually holds around 250 ml only if the pump tube reaches the bottom — and the tube length depends on the bottle supplier. This is why packaging should be chosen before the first bulk order, not after.

Also worth knowing: the same bottle from two suppliers can differ by five millilitres in usable volume. At 10,000 units that is real money.

Testing You Should Expect Before Bulk

  • Accelerated stability — typically 12 weeks at elevated temperature, which is why realistic body wash timelines run 10 to 14 weeks from brief to delivery.
  • Microbiological challenge test — protects the product if a customer introduces water or leaves the cap off in a wet shower.
  • Compatibility test against the actual pack, not a generic bottle.

MOQ in Practice

Body wash MOQs are usually lower than skincare in unit terms because the product is cheaper and filling lines run faster. But the real constraint is often the packaging: printed bottles and cartons have their own minimums that can sit well above the liquid minimum. Ask for both numbers before you commit to a shape.
